Digital Transformation in the Maritime Logistics Sector
Dec 04 , 2025

The global maritime logistics sector is experiencing a profound transformation driven by digitalization, which has become a cornerstone in modernizing the maritime transport ecosystem. Today, digital technologies serve as a fundamental enabler in shifting from paper-based transactions and traditional processes to an integrated digital framework built on real-time tracking and advanced data management—significantly improving the accuracy of vessel and cargo operations and accelerating procedural workflows.

This transformation extends beyond technological modernization; it enhances clearance procedures, reduces waiting times, elevates operational quality, and strengthens global competitiveness.

Saudi ports stand out in this landscape as strategic hubs connecting Asia, Europe, and Africa. Consequently, digital transformation plays a crucial role in supporting trade and advancing the objectives of Vision 2030, which aims to diversify the national economy and strengthen the logistics services sector. This transition represents a strategic step toward establishing a globally competitive logistics environment and enhancing the efficiency of national supply chains. Notably, the transport and logistics sector contributed to a 6.2% increase in Saudi Arabia's GDP in 2025."

The Importance of Digital Transformation and Key Initiatives in Saudi Arabia:

Saudi Arabia is undertaking a major shift in port operations and logistics services through the adoption of state-of-the-art technologies, paving the way for the emergence of “smart ports.” This evolution is part of a broader national direction toward economic diversification, innovation, and modern technology adoption.

Saudi ports play a pivotal role in the logistics landscape; their strategic location has positioned them as global gateways connecting continents and facilitating international trade flows.

Digitalization is enabling the development of a more advanced supply chain through tools such as cargo management systems, container tracking technologies, fast electronic customs clearance, operational simulation, and data analytics—all integrated within a unified digital ecosystem that enhances accuracy and efficiency across the entire operational cycle.

As part of this digital shift, Saudi ports are upgrading their infrastructure, operating modern terminals equipped with advanced technologies, and expanding handling capacities. The transformation of traditional procedures—from customs clearance to container tracking and cargo management—into fully digital processes has accelerated performance, reduced errors, and enhanced the attractiveness of Saudi ports to global investors and international shipping lines.

Performance Figures Demonstrate Tangible Progress:

June 2025:
Saudi ports recorded an 18.66% increase in container throughput compared to June 2024, reaching 696.84 thousand TEUs.

August 2025:
Total handled containers reached 750.6 thousand TEUs, marking a 9.52% increase year-on-year, while transshipment volumes rose by 14.7%.

September 2025:
Ports handled 22.52 million tons of general cargo, dry bulk, and liquid bulk, reflecting an 8.6% increase compared to September 2024. Container volumes experienced a slight and natural dip of 2.75%, attributed to variations in cargo types and shipping patterns.

These performance indicators highlight the measurable impact of digital transformation on operational efficiency, procedural speed, and cargo-handling accuracy across Saudi ports in 2025. This progress aligns with Saudi Arabia’s recent attainment of membership in the International Maritime Organization (IMO), reaffirming its commitment to global standards and best practices.

With sustained investment in digitalization and advanced maritime technologies, Saudi ports are progressing toward a globally integrated logistics network powered by data—enhancing operational speed, strengthening supply chain reliability, and boosting global competitiveness.
